How to Find Happiness When You're Feeling Down

Happiness can sometimes seem like a foreign concept, a distant memory that you once had the pleasure of experiencing. Sometimes the absence of happiness can make you question life and its concepts, but I firmly believe the point of us all being here is to find happiness. I've had my fair share of  moments when life has thrown me curve balls and I end up asking myself 'What's the point in all this?' but these are the things I do to show life I know how to hit back.

Tip 1: Wake up early every day.

Set your alarm 1 hour earlier, then an hour earlier the next day, then an hour earlier the next until you wake up at 7 or 8am everyday. This might seem like the simplest thing for some, but trust me this can be incredibly difficult when you struggle to find a reason to get up. Laying in bed can seem like an easy escape, avoiding the day and letting it roll by to the next, but getting up early will give you more time to accomplish tasks, clear your head and get more out of the day. Take it a day at a time, don't promise yourself to wake up at 7am tomorrow if you usually get up at 12pm, baby steps and you'll get there.

Tip 2: Block out all negativity from your life.

That includes anyone who doesn't make you the best version of yourself. Don't be afraid to distance yourself from someone who doesn't add any positive value to your life, even if it means not having them in your life anymore. If that person doesn't bring out the best in you and doesn't value the great things about you, it's sometimes necessary to cut ties with them. Never feel like you have to put up with someone who makes you unhappy. You are completely in charge of your life and who's in it, and as Robin Williams once said,

'I used to think that the worst thing in life was to end up alone. It's not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel alone.'

Tip 3: Make a plan.

That dream you have? Go after it. That idea you can't stop thinking about? Make it happen. Having something to put all your passion and energy into is a huge turning point in finding happiness. Set yourself mini goals in achieving your dream, research the steps needed to succeed in the first part of your plan. Ever hear of people having a 5 year plan? Start yours now. Right now, jot down your ideas and go. In 2 years time you'll thank yourself for starting today. You'll find yourself wanting to get up everyday, wanting to succeed and build on your idea. You can be anything you want in this world if you want it enough.

Tip 4: Live life one day at a time.

Don't get too stressed thinking about the future. Society can make it seem like you have to have everything figured out by a certain age but in reality, most of us don't know exactly what we're doing. If you're unsure about your future, don't rush into making decisions and don't feel bad about taking more time than others to decide. Life is a huge lesson and don't be afraid to not follow the crowd. If the School->Uni->Job route isn't for you, don't feel like you have to fit in with the rest. You'll figure it out, it just takes time and learning.

Tip 5: Go outside and explore.

Even if it's just 10 minutes around the block in the evening, getting out of the house can have a huge benefit on your happiness. Again, this might seem like an incredibly straight forward thing but for some, even the concept of going outside can seem unachievable at times. Go down to the river and walk along the bank or to your nearest forest park, just getting fresh air and taking in the scenery can be enough to clear your head. Staying in touch with reality helps to keep a happy mind.

Tip 6: Do what makes YOU happy.

Not your parents, not your friends, not society, YOU. Do anything and everything that makes you happy, and once you find that thing that makes you happy, don't ever stop. Don't let anybody try and change or mould you or your opinions. Don't be afraid to remind people that not everyone has to think the way they do and just because they don't like what you like, doesn't mean it's wrong.
